Picture This: The Beauty of Ancient Script

Although a Latinized script is the predominant script in use throughout Vietnam today, Vietnamese scholars for a long time borrowed Chinese characters for much of their work, and then modified that script for scholarly work from the 15th to 19th centuries. Although these characters are no longer used in daily life, these scripts still appear on special occasions, such as Vietnam’s lunar new year. In this picture, Tran Quang Duc captured an old man in a traditional long dress (ao dai) writing characters as calligraphy in Hanoi. See more of Duc’s images at tranquangduc.com.
