Life on the Largest Lagoon in Southeast Asia

Spanning more than 70 km along the coast of Thua Thien Hue Province, the Tam Giang - Cau Hai Lagoon System is the largest lagoon in Southeast Asia. This unique mixture of freshwater and saltwater has created such a diverse range of biodiversity, so much so that local tour operators call it a biological museum. Home to more than 350,000 people, this lagoon has become a way of life for the neighboring communities. From fishing, to selling goods at the floating markets, and even a source of entertainment for the local kids — their livelihood depends on these waters.

Below, Thanh Hien captured one of the kids jumping off a boat into Cau Hai Lagoon just as the sun was rising in 2014.
