Journeying In Son Doong: The World's Largest Cave

Son Doong stunned the world after a local man in Quang Binh Province led international explorers into its depths in 2009. This massive cave is the pearl in the crown of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, otherwise known as the ‘Kingdom of Caves’.

On a second expedition in 2010, researchers found that some sections soared to heights of 200 meters and stretched 150 meters wide. It was then that Son Doong was recognized as the world’s largest cave, a title previously held by Deer Cave in Malaysia.

Son Doong is a wonderland of huge stalagmites and stalactites, a mighty river and astonishing dolines. In the picture below, amateur photographer Mai Trang captured the expedition team walking in Doline 2 after a two-day trek to reach the giant sinkhole.
